The
Holiday That Didn't Quite
Work...
I went on Holiday recently
to an old favourite spot of mine and my mother's,
Crete. We decided to go on a
nice little holiday for a week; 12th of June to
the 19th of June.
It got off to a pretty
good start, Lazing around at the pool, shopping
for Cherries and tasting the local cuisine in the
restaurants dotted around the area of Koutoulafari
which we were staying in. It was lovely, except
for all the football that was playing in every
restaurant and local pub on the WHOLE
island.
We had just come up from
the pool on the Monday, I went to have a shower
and my mom was cleaning and drying out our clothes
on the large balcony that we had at our apartment.
Next thing I know, I turn off the water to hear
screaming. I grabbed a towel and begun to dry
myself off, then getting dressed as I listened to
what sounded like some form of animal cry or
someone in a lot of
pain.
It wasn't until I heard my
name being called that I realised what it was. It
was MY MOTHER!! I rushed out as one of the other
holiday makers rushed up the steps to see what was
happening. I find my mother, lying on the floor,
clutching her left shoulder in pain as she tried
to pull herself up. I didn't know what had
happened but one look at the floor that she was
lying on told me all I needed to know; she'd
obviously fallen and injured
herself.
The holiday makers quickly
got security and I had to help my mother enter the
apartment. Then I had to rush and get our
insurance forms, money, passports and our mobile
phones. The Ambulance arrived within 5 to 10
minutes and we were carted down to the Medicare
centre in the main town,
Hersonnissos.
The next day, we returned
down to the Medicare Centre where we were then
dragged to a Private Hospital in
Heraklion which we had to stay in for the next 2
days.
My mother had to get a
screw in her shoulder because of her dislocated
collarbone that had been caused by the fall. I
made a good day out of it though! There was a
Museum nearby that I ended up visiting and I spent
the rest of the last day running around, looking
for food that might just be better than the food
in the
Hospital!
Now back in
Ireland,
I'm glad to say my Mother is getting better and
being as stubborn as ever! She got her stitches
removed and she's on the road to a full recovery,
which is good for me since I won't have to do
everything for her for much
longer!!

Lights! Camera! Rashers...?
Recently, I took part in the
filming of an Advertisement for Television done by
Galtee Rashers. You've probably seen it on the RTE
or TV3, the one with the men in white suits with
rashers stapled on being chased by Beagles? Well,
I was in it!
I was paid 85 Euros to
participate in the filming of the Ad, performing
in the background cheering on the men in rashers
as the beagles rushed behind
them.
It was very entertaining
and exciting to be in a Professional atmosphere;
despite such a small role that I performed (I am
seen in the very first few seconds of the Ad, even
obtaining a slight close up!). I was down there
from 8am to 8pm, even taking off a day of School
to work on it (Shh! Don't tell my teachers!) but
since I was in Transition Year, It wasn't much of
a miss!
I was first filmed in a
large field where the men had to run down while
the beagles followed. I was placed near the front
of the line, cheering and shouting as they rushed
past. After that, we were brought up for Lunch
since it had already reached 12pm! Once lunch was
over, we then went down to St. Mary's and
Michael's
Church.
I was positioned on the
top of the wall, waving a flag as the men ran down
the steps and numerous of them fell down on their
way! I almost fell off the wall as I waved the
flag
energetically!
Once that was taken, we
went to the old school where we filmed the very
start of the race as the flag went down and the
men started to race. This is the part where I was
used
most!
We were given dinner half
way through filming and then resumed just before
it became
dark.
The only problem I had
with the Ad was the treatment of the beagles that
were used during filming, having seen some of them
being hit with a cane and a whip. Other than that;
FUN DAY!!!
